Swiss Arabian
Founded 1974 · Sharjah, United Arab Emirates · Hussein Adam Ali
Swiss Arabian is the first perfume factory in the United Arab Emirates, founded in 1974 by Hussein Adam Ali, a young Yemeni, three years after the country came into being. Half a century on it is still in Sharjah and still the house against which every other Gulf perfumer's age is measured.
History
Ali set up the operation with three employees and half a million dirhams, and the Sharjah factory came on stream within six months. From there the story is one of scale: six plants in Sharjah, a thousand employees and the first perfumer in the trade to gain ISO 9001 certification. The house does both perfumeries at once — the traditional attar in oil and the Western eau de parfum — and that dual nature is what sets it apart from the newer Gulf houses, which were born already looking West. In 2024 it marked fifty years.
Iconic models
Shaghaf Oud
A sweet oud with saffron and rose; the house's best-known outside the Gulf.
Casablanca
From its classic catalogue, predating the international turn.
Layali Rouge
An oriental floral long in the catalogue, often cited as an alternative to a designer floral.
Worth knowing
It was the first perfumer in the Emirates and the first in the trade to gain ISO 9001 certification. When it opened, the country was three years old.
