Maison Margiela

Founded 1988; perfumery in 2010 · Paris, France · Martin Margiela

Maison Margiela is the fashion house that made anonymity a signature — a blank label, no name — and its Replica line does something equally conceptual: rebuild one specific smell from memory, with the date and the place printed on the label like an archive card.

History

Martin Margiela, a Belgian trained in Antwerp, founded his house in Paris in 1988 and built a body of work on dismantling: exposed seams, recycled garments, a blank nameless label. Perfumery came in 2010, by which time the house was owned by the OTB group, and in 2012 came Replica, the line that made it mass. Every Replica states a place and a year on the label — "Jazz Club, Brooklyn, 2013" — and composes the smell of that scene. It is narrative perfumery sold at designer prices, and it worked: By the Fireplace and Jazz Club are among the trade's best sellers.

Iconic models

  • Replica By the Fireplace (2015)

Chestnut, clove and guaiac: a lit hearth. The line's best seller.

  • Replica Jazz Club (2013)

Rum, tobacco and vanilla; a Brooklyn bar.

  • Replica Lazy Sunday Morning

Clean sheets, musk and pear. The most literal in the collection.

Worth knowing

Every Replica carries a place and a year printed on the label, like an archive card. It is not decoration: the formula sets out to rebuild that specific smell.
