Luminox was founded in 1989 by the Americans Barry Cohen and Richard Timbo, out of the idea of applying self-powered tritium tubes to hard-use watches. Its name joins the Latin "lumi" (light) and "nox" (night), and its hallmark is total visibility in absolute darkness. Today it is a reference for the tactical and adventure watch, Swiss-made, and has been part of the Swiss Mondaine group since the mid-2010s.
History
In 1989 Barry Cohen came across the self-powered illumination systems of the Swiss firm mb-microtec and founded Luminox with Richard Timbo to bring the technology to watches. In 1992-1993 the Navy SEAL officer Nick North approached the brand at a trade show, and a watch was developed to fit the unit's night and underwater operations. In 1994 the Original Navy SEAL 3001 went on sale, the model that set the brand's identity. After the SEALs, other elite units adopted it: the US Coast Guard, the NYPD, the Singapore Air Force and Israeli special forces among them. The brand widened its catalogue with series such as the Colormark 3050/3051 (2007), automatic divers, the SXC space line (a collaboration with XCOR Aerospace) and the Leatherback Sea Turtle. It added high-profile alliances with Bear Grylls (the Survival collection) and with Lockheed Martin for the F-117 Nighthawk line, drawn from the stealth aircraft. In 2016 the Bernheim family (Mondaine group, Zurich) took full ownership, consolidating its Swiss Made character; in 2024 it relaunched the 3001 Heritage for its 35th anniversary.

Worth knowing
A Luminox does not glow by being 'charged' with light the way ordinary photoluminescent material does: it uses tritium gas micro-tubes (mb-microtec technology) that glow continuously and on their own, with no batteries and no prior exposure, for up to around 25 years.
