Parker

Founded 1888 · Janesville, Wisconsin, United States · George Safford Parker

Parker is the house that made the pen a mass product without giving up the engineering. Its founder began selling other people's pens, got tired of repairing them and decided to make them properly himself. Out of that came two of the most influential pens of the twentieth century: the Duofold and the 51.

History

George Safford Parker sold pens for the John Holland Pen Company and, being a good salesman, undertook to repair them; the volume of repairs taught him exactly what failed. In 1888 he founded his own company in Janesville, Wisconsin. In 1921 he launched the Duofold, with a striking orange body and a high price, which broke the idea that a pen ought to be discreet. In 1941 he presented the Parker 51, with a hooded nib and a cigar silhouette, designed to write with fast-drying inks; it became one of the best-selling pens in history and an exercise in industrial design still studied today. The brand is now part of the Newell Brands group.
