Maui Jim

Founded 1980 · Lahaina, Maui, Hawaii, United States

Maui Jim began in 1980 selling sunglasses on the beach at Lahaina, and its subject is one thing only: the lens. Its PolarizedPlus2 technology does not just polarise — cutting reflection — but filters infrared and puts saturation back into colour, which is why the house sells itself on what you see, not on how you look.

History

The house started as a sunglasses stand on the beach at Lahaina, on Maui, solving a local and very real problem: Pacific sun at sea level, with the glare off the water on top of it. That is where its obsession with the lens comes from. PolarizedPlus2 combines polarisation with coatings that filter infrared and lift red, green and blue, and the house makes it in three materials — SuperThin glass, polycarbonate and MauiBrilliant. For four decades it was an independent company; in 2022 it passed to the Kering Eyewear group, though it keeps its lens manufacturing.

Iconic models

  • SuperThin Glass lens

Worth knowing

The house advertises by showing what you see through the lens, not the face of the person wearing it: one of the very few eyewear brands whose advertising is about the lens and not the frame.
