Dickies
Founded 1922 · Fort Worth, Texas, United States · C. N. Williamson and E. E. Dickie
Dickies has been making workwear since 1922, and its 874 trouser is probably the best-selling work garment in history: straight cut, polyester and cotton, and a factory-pressed crease that never comes out. Dressing a labourer and half the punk and hip hop scene turned out to be the same business.
History
The cousins C. N. Williamson and E. E. Dickie bought an overall factory in Bryan, Texas, in 1922 and founded the Williamson-Dickie Manufacturing Company; hence the initials. During the Second World War the house produced uniforms for the US Army, and came out of it as the standard for workwear across the South. The 874, launched in 1967, is the turning point: made for the workshop, it was taken up by the cholos of southern California, by skaters and by hip hop, and the house never denied it or fought it. In 2017 VF Corporation bought the company.
Iconic models
874 Work Pant (1967)
Straight cut, permanent crease. The best-selling work garment there is.
574 work shirt
Short or long sleeve, two flap pockets. The American workshop uniform.
83294 overall
The house's original product: the factory they bought in 1922 made overalls.
Eisenhower Jacket
A short jacket with a fitted waist, taken from the wartime military uniform.
Worth knowing
The crease on an 874 is not ironed in: it comes from the factory and does not wash out. It is a treatment of the fabric, and it is the reason a work trouser could pass for a dress trouser.
